Aimé Laurent certainly seems talkative; he lounges in an elegant armchair, smiling. However he glances around the room as if he’s frightened of something or someone but the smile never falters.

Ask Aimé a question.

Dressed in sashed gown of English cloth and a fashionable scarlet shawl, Marguerite moves away from her husband's side and further into the room. The fireplace, she notes, throws strange shadows on a youthful face. French etiquette dictates that she should stay in her place, but she's in England now. Introductions are done differently here.

"Isn't this the most dreadfully boring party you've ever been to?" she murmurs with a chuckle, falling into the seat opposite.

Aimé laughs, but politely turns it into a cough as he catches the eye of his older brother across the room, a man who would certainly not take well to Aimé being anything short of decorative this evening.

“Aren’t they all? I find the English have very little passion for anything.” He says. “But as far as parties go they seem positively without ideas. It’s always the same faces, the same music. There is never any excitement.”

"They do indeed," Marguerite laughed, turning her attention away from the other guests. The gentleman in front of her was considerably more interesting and her own husband was otherwise engaged, thus unable to entertain her.

Pursing her lips, she titled her head onto her shoulder, watching him carefully. "And what excitement would you prefer, Monsieur? A duel?"

"A duel would be adequate - if fought over love. If over money then why not let lawyers sort it out? The bloodshed is almost the same." He replied, evenly if a little teasing. "Perhaps a scandal of some sort to while away the time. An illegitimate daughter or a fraudulent scoundrel at court."

"Yes, either would prevail in amusement over the more sedate delights of a game of cards," Marguerite agreed, chuckling lightly. "The only rumor I've heard all night pertains to your own person. Some of the ladies were wondering what could possess a young gentleman to sit here so quietly and observe us all." She lowered her voice playfully. "One would almost think you are a spy, Monsieur."

Aimé laughs, not bothering this time to hide it, enduring the angry look cast his way.
“A spy? Me? No. I haven’t the heart for all of those escapades. I am waiting for someone and watching to pass the time. After all, it does give an air of mystery. I assume that is why you came over, no? I am hoping it will attract someone else tonight also.”

"Oh but have brightened my evening, Monsieur," she chuckled. "An air of mystery indeed..." Her eyes searched the crowd, trying to see who he might be waiting for. "Hmm, I should think you've be waiting for a lady, but you are too silent. Whatever it is, it must be clandestine meeting of some kind." Her eyes widened comically. "Is it a forbidden love affair? Something tragic and beautiful?"

"Clandestine? Yes. Forbidden? Yes, most probably from what I hear. Affair? You would call it that, I am most sure. Love? No. Not love." He smiles, feeling he can give at least that much away. "Hardly tragic and most certainly not beautiful. Not if you are around later to see who I am meeting."

It was daring to tease this way, he knew. One wrong move and he could become an outcast before he had been included. Better to play along and let her believe it was a lady he had arranged to meet.

"I do believe you speak in riddles, Monsieur," Marguerite chuckles lightly, thinly veiled interest obvious to her companion. "I am glad it is not tragic. That would have brought the evening down even more. But not a love affair? How dismal. Every young gentleman should be romantically engaged, I always find."

Reclining back against the seat, she watched him appraisingly. "What an unexpected enigma you are, sir."

His lips quirk in a smile and he raises an eyebrow. "Who says I am not romantically engaged? But I am sure you know as well as I that we must make ends meet in this new England."

Guilty, she glances toward her husband. "Yes, each in our own way, we must make do." Before melancholy feelings and forgetfulness take hold, Marguerite shifts her gaze to the lady at the piano. It's bad enough to shake her from her thoughts.

Aimé notices her obvious discomfort and frowns, looking more than a little shamefaced. “I’m sorry. I did not mean to stir old memories or hurt feelings. I meant only that you must not feel too bad for me. I simply keep my business from my pleasure in this case.”

A wave of her fan and the whole thing is forgotten. "It is your great fortune to have been born a man that you may separate the two," Marguerite notes pleasantly. "Although I do believe that gives me another clue. A matter of business at a party like this..."

Marguerite's smile fades, but the amiable mask stays in place, as befits the circumstances.

"Perhaps you will be more successful in my absence." She stands abruptly, turning on her heel. "A pleasure, I'm sure."

Aimé jumped to his feet, aware now he was drawing eyes but fearful that he would offend this young woman further if he did not.
“Madam! Madam! I did not mean to upset you, Madam!”

Marguerite shot him another look, aware that her husband had scarce turned his eye to her since she'd moved away from his party. If she escaped into the night, he would mostly likely not remark it.

"Non, Monsieur," she replied in French, backtracking. "I am not... upset." A hand came to rest on his arm, the gesture conspiratorial. "But regardless of whom you hope to meet, do be careful. We are scapegoats in exile. Wolves surround us."

It was the kindest she could allow herself to be and though it seemed unnecessary to speak in code, she harbored no illusion that her English friends would lift a finger to help her, were she in trouble with the French authorities. It was, essentially, left to her to foster more lucrative relations.

Aimé's eyes widened, but he did not resist her hand on his arm. He saw in her face and felt it too - the fear of a new world they had come to and their unsecured place in it. Marguerite had done better than he in find safety in this storm-battered island and yet still...

"I do intent to be careful, and I do not intend to draw any more attention to myself than wise." He spoke carefully, feeling now foolish. He had not arranged the meeting, his elder brother had and for all Aimé knew they could be walking into a trap.

"It was hardly a joke." Harry says, handing the boy a fresh glass from one of the servant's platters. "But I doubt it would happen. They wouldn't let him into the country, never mind take anyone away."

"You and your family must be doing very well for yourselves." He glances around, noting the expensive furniture, the society guests, the fine wine. "How long have you been here? Three months? That's quite impressive."

Harry shrugs. "I over-heard your brother discussing it with one of those pretty little things over there. I'm surprised you aren't receiving as much attention." He pauses, taking a sip of his drink and then smirks, shark-like. "Exactly how has your family managed to become so well-off so quickly? I understand you escaped with only the clothes on your back."

The young man scowls, unable to keep his dislike for the forward English man from his face. Of all the nerve to speak to him in such a manner. Who could have invited such a brash, uncouth man?
